  1. We Need to be Thinking of Names

    June 27, 2009 by MyEye

I love litter themes and bombarded you all with themes and potential names when you were expecting puppies.  Now it will be your turn.  I have two theme ideas — either Book Awards, e.g. Caldecott, Newbury, Pulitzer, Nobel, Booker, Commonwealth, EMMA, Hammett — or Newspapers, e.g., Clarion, Chronicle, Daily Planet,  Journal, Tribune, Herald, Observer, etc.  I would really like to use the entire name of a paper as in “Wall ST Journal”, “Washington Post”, “Times Picayune”, but with all the kennel names that need to fit, that’s probably out of reach.  I doubt we could pay AKC enough for all the letters we’d need.  Just the kennel names and spaces come out to 22.  36 is permitted and you may pay for up to 40 letters!

The Shepherd litters were alphabetical, so if I picked up where I left off thirty years ago, this post would be brought to you by the letter “K”.  Themes are more fun, I think.

So, have at it — with my thanks!

  2. Changes

    June 26, 2009 by MyEye

Today I bought yet another domain name.  I wanted something that better reflects my life and my attitude about it.  I also wanted a domain that related to my addiction to Cardigans.  For the past couple of months I have been musing over a kennel name — no really good reason since a couple of Cardis do not a kennel make.  I know, however, that the day’s coming when I will want a Chase child.  The kennel name I used for the German Shepherds doesn’t quite fit our funny little friends.  I could not have predicted how quickly (it appears) that I’d need the new name.  Anyway, I looked for a Kennel name by pouring over lists of Welsh words and names.  Today I narrowed it down to five words.  Humor me — I’m getting to it . . .

Gwawr means Dawn — that’s my Sunday-go-to-meeting name.  However, can you say gwawr (remembering that the wr makes an oo sound (as in door))?  Can you say it with Baledwr, for example?  Okay, I took it off the list.  Then there was a pretty word Cerys (beloved) – the beginning C is a hard C, do you believe anyone will remember that it’s not Ceres or Sirius?  That it is pronounced Ke-ris?   I doubt it, so took it off the list.  Another word I liked has been used in several dogs’ names over the years.  We got down to two words.  The first was Ilar (joyful), and I like it a lot, but it’s perhaps a bit short, a tiny word that will be lost in the dog’s name.  So, I settled on

    Elyan

It means “a moment in time”.  That feels like life, that feels like the fleeting joy that is our dogs, that feels like my place in the universe.  So, Elyan it is.  It is pronounced el-e-on.  Carolyn is working on my blog (needs it, huh?), so it will be moved to the new domain in good time.  The blog name will be “. . . a Moment in Time”, the eddress will be http://elyancardigans.com.  The old blog eddresses will still point to the new domain.

. . . and when will I need this kennel name?  Pretty soon I think.  Chase will be bred to Carolyn and Mandy’s splendid girl Phoebe.  Phoebe is due in season any time now.  Our plan is that Phoebe will come to Albuquerque to have her puppies.  C-Myste/Baledwr have agreed that my name will also be on the litter — so these babies will be a moment in my time.  They will be the first Elyan puppies.

There are always things to investigate at the office.  Since there are no plumbers at the house, Inca is home and Chase is at work.  First thing — let’s check out the mail (he’s expecting a letter from Phoebe):

We are enjoying an early monsoon season.  The afternoon clouds boil up and are so elegant against our blue skies.  Other wonderful skies are waiting for you at Skywatch.

  5. Two Helpers Aren’t Helpful

Addenda:  Thanks for reminding me, Dennis.  There is a rebate of up to $1500 for installing one of these tankless water heaters.  That will easily cover the cost of purchase and installation.

Both Inca and Chase are at the office today.  Neither likes to share office duties, but there’s stuff going on at the house.  I am replacing my old water heater with a Bosch tankless (green) instant water heater.  It’s a cute little thing (10″ deep x 24″ wide x 36″ high) that hangs on the wall in the utility closet, has no pilot, and my brother (remember butt-crack pants) assures me will save about 30% on my natural gas bill.  So, the plumbers are at the house taking out the old, giant tank and putting in this cute little box.  The dogs like the plumbers.  Those guys are right behind the FedEx and UPS men on the fondness meter.  So the dogs make it difficult for them to work.  To limit the size of the plumbing bill, I brought Chase and Inca with me to work.  Inca is happy to simply snooze, but Chase wants her to play with him.  Periodically he lets out one of his high-pitched (annoy the neighboring tenants) barks.  It may be a long day.
