FOR THE WHOLE YEAR

From Penni, Kip, Inca and Chase

2008 was a stunning year for us show-wise.  All three of my dogs earned titles: a CD, an RN, and a CH, and they are ready to go for another CD, a TD, RA, and a CDX.  Dog goals for this year include Inca’s CD and novice agility titles, Kip’s TD, last leg of his RA, and his CDX, and anything I can get Chase to do with even a modicum of control — basic obedience for the young brat, his TD, and continued agility.

I’m going to get healthier, and more organized both at work and at home.  I’m going to throw “stuff” away or donate it.  I’m going to take a trip just to take a trip — not to a show/trial/test — just go some place where my camera and I can wander happily.

I wish wonderful things for my children and my granddaughter, for my friends (both real and imaginary), for my clients — heaven knows they need something wonderful — and for the dogs and me.  Winning the lottery would be over the top, but just having reasons to smile every day would be great.  Since I believe we make our own reasons to smile, this part is up to me.

So, in short, for 2009, I’m wishing each of us happiness, kindness, friendship, and the best of health.

Adrienne is the office grandchild and Chase is today’s office dog.  We all know that Chase needs to be trained, so Adrienne is helping him (and giving me the opportunity to use the new camera again).

Boy are there ever a lot of instructions, but I have a willing subject in Chase.  Here is his first photo with the new camera.  He’s always so cute!

. . . and another cute look (better focus too, I think)

Now, it’s not much snow, but it is snow.  The first two storms swirled around Albuquerque so we missed a white Christmas here in town.  The ski resorts did very well though, so ya’ll come, bring your skis and your money.  Remember, New Mexico is a very poor state (perhaps because the US government owns one-third of the land and pays no taxes on it).

I didn’t need to go anywhere, but when I realized it was snowing, I could not resist a quick zoom up to the post office.  The camera should have been there, but was not.  Then I went another mile to the “fancy” pet store where I bought Chase & Company a dragon and a road kill raccoon.  These are supposed to be nearly indestructible toys — says the manufacturer.  It took Chase all of fifteen minutes to begin destuffing the dragon.  The road kill raccoon was next.  It only has stuffing in the head, but he opened a small wound and began removing the fluff.  So, these go on the forget-it-list.  Price does not equal dog worthiness.

The Cardis get a little crazy when we have a cold snap so the three are high tailing it through the house, around tables and under chairs.  They seem to like it when I stay home for a couple days in a row, and I must admit it’s fun spending down time with them.  We all climb on the couch and cuddle up – or Chase lies on top of Kip like he did when he first came home.  That’s the holiday spirit!

It’s the latest blog tag game — Traci typed my name again.  I have to describe who my cardis would be if they were human.  (I am eternally grateful they are not human, but okay . . .)

Kip:  The Dogster site id’ed him as Will Smith.  Kip is a positive, loving, willing-to-try-anything guy.  He does not understand meanness in others.  His favorite hobbies are following me around, doing obedience and tracking, and playing with a large group of friends.  Eating has a higher priority than do any of his hobbies.  Chase annoys him, but he is comfortable with Inca.

Inca:  The Dink is Empress of the Known Universe.  She puts up with no crap from the boys — simply expects all to worship her.  Inca loves to try new dishes, as long as she is not expected to cook or to clean up.  Her favorite place is on the middle stair so that no one may pass without acknowledging her presence.  She loves Granddaughter Adrienne and would prefer to live with her.  Dogster said she is Oprah.

Chase:  What can I say?  If he weren’t co-owned, he might have become ground dogfood by now.  He is creative, sweet, but demanding. He is original and likes to present the unexpected.  He wants to be the king of the world, but suffers the oppression by Inca.  His favorite place to be is right under my feet.  He lives for dog shows and agility and tracking because someone is then paying attention to him.  He does not share well and blows off the demands by the other dogs that he back off.  If I could describe him with only one word, it would be “exuberant”.  Dogster assessed him as Simon Cowell.

Carolyn, if you’ve not been tagged, you’re it.  And Emily — you have so many critters that I’ll cut you some slack and let you pick just six to profile.

The most important thing Santa brought was Clue and Joanna back together, but on the home front, Santa outdid himself.

I think it’s hard to buy for me because I have everything that will fit in my house.  I have artwork in storage, more clothing than I’ll ever wear (New Year’s Resolution is to sort and give away), shelves of cute collectibles (more in storage).  My older son and his wife wrack their brains each year — and this year — wow!

Signed by all the Lady Lobo basketball players and the coaches.  During the off season, I can just look at the basketball.  On the protective dome is an engraved plaque “#1 Lady Lobo Fan”.  That may be me!

Thank you, Santa.

Many of you have been following Joanna Kimball’s efforts to find her young merle Cardigan “Clue”.  Clue has been lost in New Hampshire since the morning of December 16th.  The area has received more than two feet of snow.  Joanna, her family, and her friends in Amherst have done everything that could be done to make sure a little lost dog was found – AND IT HAPPENED!  No details yet, but Joanna received a call this morning that Clue has been rescued.  She is on her way now to claim the dog.  What a special Christmas for everyone who cares about animals, and particularly for this family that was missing its blue Cardi girl.

Happy holidays everyone.  May all your dreams come true

We have three storms making their way here for a Christmas visit, and desert flower that I am, I planned to whine about them — you know, we could have three inches of snow and the temperatures could fall to 24 degrees.  But I can’t do it — with Holly and Joanna in the northeast with ice and deep snow and power outages; with Le’o and Emily and Kristin in the northwest being buried in the cold, white stuff, I just can’t do it.  I know we won’t have enough snow to prevent the Element from traveling across town for Christmas Eve festivities at my son’s home, and there won’t be enough to keep us from tracking on Christmas morning (I kind’a like snow tracking).  So, I’ll save my whining for something else later.

I’m getting a Nikon D40x with two VR lenses for Christmas.  I hate to say good bye to the little Olympus, but I miss having an SLR.  Well, I have an old Minolta, but it uses film and you have to wait while it’s developed.  I’ve become part of the instant gratification gang — so a digital SLR it is.  Thanks eBay (and thanks to Tom the Dogfather who helped guide me as I bid).  I also bought the Nikon D40/D40x for Dummies book — that’s how I function AND I got Enya’s new CD “Winter Came”.  It has some splendid cuts on it.

Chase has a lot he wants to talk about, so he’s getting his own web site.  Grandma Carolyn is building it for him.  I know he’ll keep it interesting with his antics.  I think he’s counting on my new camera for populating the Photo Album.

Kip is entered in a TD test on January 11th.  It’s at our tracking site about 45 minutes north of my home.  Many of the judges who’ve come for our tests claim what we label a “T” would be an “X” anywhere else.  Desert tracking is just different.  In March we’ll be hosting our VST “A” Match so that we’ll be permitted by AKC to offer an annual VST test.  Kip, Chase and I have been training VST for the past year, so hope to be ready.

Inca-dink starts Intermediate Agility in January.  I’ve made a public plea for one of those long-legged young kids to work with her and then take her to trials — partly because I’m not fast enough to keep up with Inca (and soon Chase), and partly because I have so many other things going on with tracking, polishing Kip for his CDX and getting his third RA leg, getting Inca ready for her CD, taking Chase through Agility Prep (again!), and after Nationals laying some serious obedience training on the little man.  Then there’s the day job — shoot — that really cuts into my training time.  Maybe that’s what I’ll whine about . . .

The dogs get me up at 6:00 every morning.  Since they all sprawl on the bed, it’s logistically simple for them to converge on me and to try death by licking — oh, yech!  So we get up, they have their chicken necks, and I start some coffee.

This morning was normal, except when I looked out my window, this is what I saw (to the east).  Couldn’t wait for SkyWatch Friday to post these.  Surely the roses and blues are an omen of good things to come.  So, good morning everyone!

While I was at the dog shows in Los Lunas in mid-October, I ordered some items from Karen’s Critters.  Karen is a one-woman business in Las Cruces NM.  My “stuff” arrived today and I love everything.  What do you think?
