Last week I posted about a Cardi/Cattle Dog cross that needed a home. As a puppy, Pepper had gone to live in a man’s backyard — 24/7 — in the back yard. The Flight Attendant that lived next door had periodically spent time holding and playing with him, but other than that, he received no affection. The man decided he couldn’t take care of the youngster. The flight attendant took him home (she rescues cats). There ensued the great cat round-up which apparently was wild and wooly. The flight attendant decided she couldn’t keep Pepper and handed him off to a lovely older couple that lives out in the canyon. They have two rescue dogs and the youngster was a bit much for them. Nonetheless they took him to their vet where he was checked out, given a clean bill of health, and vaccinated. They sent email to some of the people in our local dog training club indicating the dog was a Cardigan Welsh Corgi. That pricked up ears and I received a “help” email.

Last Friday I picked Pepper up and took him home. Because most of my other dogs are off at shows or herding, only Inca was there to greet the little guy. As long as Inca gets her share of attention, she doesn’t care who I bring home. I posted on our Southwest Cardigan list about Pepper. Within hours I received a call from another local Cardigan person that had a family that wanted a Cardi and would consider a cross. Pepper was healthy and up to date on his shots. He needed to be neutered. The woman who called me is a vet tech. Her vet knows the prospective adopters and said she would neuter at no charge. Pepper is so sweet and happy — he wants to be touched and held and stroked, but has no behavioral issues. The prospective adopters are a couple with a three-year old daughter that have had Pems.

Yesterday I came into Albuquerque and met the family at my office.. What do you think happened?

So Pepper went off to be a happy dog with his very-own-little-girl. Lorelei looks pretty pleased as well. I just love happy endings!

A new report in from Anne. Holmes has not yet done anything terrible — good dog! Great owner!

Just wanted to let you know Holmes is doing great. He is such a good boy! We went for a ride to that organic dog food store yesterday. He snacked the first couple days, which I expected, but his eating didn’t pick up after that. He hasn’t been eating too well, so I got samples of a a few different gluten free foods to try, some frozen raw patties, and some dehydrated raw food. He liked the dehydrated raw food more than the dry food – he ate pretty well last night. Tonight I’ll give him the patties mixed with some dry food – I’m pretty sure he’ll like the patties! He looks a little slimmer this weekend from when I picked him up, so I wanted to get him eating well.

Josh comes home tomorrow, so I’ve got the Thundershirt ready. He follows me around the house like a shadow, which I love. He is definitely a very loyal dog. Chloe is good too, but she is a little more independent with me, and is extremely attached to Josh. They each have their own person, LOL!

I am taking him to the vet on Monday to get his records in and introduce him. I ordered the Dremel, so this week I will start working on his nails when it comes.

I’ve been trying to get some good photos, but he moves so quickly!!

I was wondering about the name tag on his collar – I love that! Where did you order it from? {Me – It is a Boomerang Tag]

I also just wanted to keep you posted… I know he means a lot to you and it sounds like he didn’t have a good experience when he was away with one of the handlers, so I just wanted to let you know things are well and he is happy. I can’t wait to start obedience classes with him – I am really looking forward to it. The classes start in March, but I’m going to start working with him at home. I hope all is well with you!

Thank you, Anne. I miss my boy, but know he is happy with you and the kids — watch out, Josh!

A local woman took in a dog that she thought was a Cardigan. I went and picked him up, but don’t think he is purebred Cardi — probably some Cattle Dog mixed in. The woman called him Pepper. He’s about 9 months old and has lived in a back yard alone since he was a baby puppy. He is so sweet, loves the other dogs and people. He just wants to be touched. The crate was news to him, the leash was a new experience (though he picked it up right away). Since he’s not a purebred, he’s also not a candidate for the Cardigan Rescue Trust. I’m hoping to find a home for him locally — someone that wants a sweet, responsive and very athletic dog. He would be such a great agility dog. I had trouble getting straight on head shots. As soon as he realizes I’m looking at him, he launches himself at me.

So, Heeeere’s Pepper:
