I have long thought that “Felony Bad Taste in Men” is a crime to which many of my clients should have been permitted to plead guilty. The sentence would be time served with the bad tasting guy. This morning’s newspaper made me realize that I could probably use some rehab as well. My former law partner has been indicted for failure to withhold/pay taxes for his business. It happened after we split up our professional relationship, but his post partum omissions led to me being interviewed by the taxman and subjected to a cursory investigation of my business tax payment records. I have to admit that I am terrified of the government, so send them every penny expected — even if I think we are being royally abused.
My biggest concern is that he will lose his license and I will be on the hook for the building we leased together. Although I no longer have an office there, my name is on the lease as a guarantor with three years to go. I did not plan to begin July in this way.
