So, What Have We Here?

September 1, 2009

Since Phoebe is the visiting mom-to-be, I wanted her to meet my vets before she “had” to meet my vets.  This afternoon we went over to the clinic.  Dr. Averhoff checked her out on the table and agreed that she was pregnant (duh?), but because of her history of huge puppies, and a C-Section for the last litter, she decided to x-ray.  Her words “At six and a half weeks, you can make out puppies.”  So she x-rayed, and then called me back to the ultrasound machine.  On the x-ray she saw only two puppies so they did an ultrasound and found four, two in each horn.  The good doc says the development is early so she’s thinking it was the breeding on the 21st that fertilized the eggs.  We are going to re-x-ray in two weeks by which time we’ll be able to tell if the puppies are gigantic and also, perhaps, find a few more.  Four healthy puppies are better than no puppies, or only one puppy, or two puppies or even three puppies.

We are continuing the regular tummy rubbing.  As Elaine Collins says, fate may want to smile on you, but you need to give fate an idea of what would make you happy . . . easy whelp . . . healthy puppies . . . girls, please.

She was bred on July 17, 18, 19, and 21. We didn’t progesterone test, so the puppies could have been conceived as late as the 23rd of July — the sperm is usually viable for up to 48 hours after insemination. Sometime the week of September 21st is the best I can do right now. C-Myste’s other girls expressed interest in the change in Phoebe’s hormones on Thursday, July 23rd, so that may be the day from which we should count. Between September 20th and 24th. As we get a little further along, we may be able to close in on the date. There will be a lot of temperature-taking!
