I’ve been afraid to say anything about the puppies’ weight gain — because they weren’t gaining. So, I’ve bottle fed them for the past week to make sure there were at least small gains. I’m not sure where Phoebe’s milk went, but there has been very little. Perhaps two puppies just didn’t challenge her enough. This morning the boyz had eyes partly open so — THIS was the day.
I stopped at Keller’s Farm Store on the way home and bought ground turkey and a quart of goat’s milk. I’ve been using Esbilac milk replacer and used 30 ml of that with 1/8 pound of turkey. I heated the Esbilac enough that it would also bring the turkey to room temperature, squished it all together, mixed it well, and put it in a quiche plate (my flying saucer puppy pan is huge). I put Phoebe outside, set the plate in the whelping pool. Following is what happened:
Look, Abel, You Just Get in the Pan
Wow! There’s Some Out Here, Too
I think they liked their first real meal. They now look pregnant and will, I expect, sleep soundly until time for supper.
