Not Another One

October 23, 2010

Walker is gone.  Leidy laid on him this evening and apparently suffocated him.  There was no puppy scream, nothing so that I could run in and rescue him.  I had been in holding and cuddling the babies.  I left them to put away dishes.  I went back in to check them before I went to bed and Leidy was frantically licking Walker, but he was gone.

I feel so helpless with this litter.  The babies are being picked off one at a time no matter how careful I am.  I am glad this day is over.

Oh Penni, I am SO sorry. How devastating. Sometimes no matter how hard you try these things just happen. I know it is hard too when you’re facing it by yourself. I am heartbroken for you. As hard as it is after something like this, just keep moving forward. Remember that last time there were only two from the start. You still have a nice sized litter, so try not to dwell on what isn’t, but focus on what IS! These will be lovely puppies and will grow to be lovely adults!

If it is any consolation you said that Thunder had been crying a lot from the beginning. Most likely there was something wrong with him from the start that wasn’t going to get better, no matter what you did. It is just one of those things!

    Tomorrow will be better!

    Hugs,
    Kathy

We feel so heart-broken for your losses. As Kathy stated, focus on the babies. If you were within driving distance I’d come over and give you a huge hug and I’m normally not a hugging person. If there is anything we can do, please let us know. Our prayers are with you and the puppies.

Penni, I am so sorry – I can’t even imagine how devastating it must be. I told my son this morning when he got up, and he said, “That means Grandpa must have needed some corgis in heaven!” Rest assured, my dad will take most excellent care of them. 🙂

Oh Penni. I’m so very sorry. I’m crying, worried even more about Panda’s soon-to-be-born babies, and know you take this whole business as seriously as I do. I too wish there was something magical to say or that I could do something that would be more helpful.

  22. sandy says:

Penni…I hope you find some peace with this saying. Sadly, I have sent it to two other friends who have suffered loss in their lives, just this week:

“We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile
circle, easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan.” —-Irving
    Townsend.

    Hugs from Washington State…
