We Had a Very Long Night

October 21, 2010

As many of you know, Leidy began whelping at noon yesterday.  She waited four hours between the first two puppies, then three hours, and then it began to vary, but was nothing you would describe as “Poppin’ ’em out.”  The last puppy, a brindle boy, was born at 4:00 this morning.  He was stillborn and we could not revive him.  We’ll run into the vet’s this morning and get Leidy a shot of oxytocin to be sure she is not retaining any placenta.  So, the final count for the poll/contest is 2 girls (1 red) and 5 boys, a total of 3 reds and 4 brindles.  Three people, Dawm S., Dawn F, and Tracey W, had the correct number, but no one guessed only two girls and no one guessed 3 red puppies.  So, I will consult with Chase and Leidy to decide how to award the “Good Guessing” prize.  We’ll announce that over the weekend.

Leidy is taking motherhood in stride.  She’s wanting to curl around her babies, but, of course, that hides a number of the faucets.  She needs to lie out flat to give the babies access.

I’ll weigh and photograph the little guys/gals this morning.  Overall they have very flashy markings and their color is deep and rich.  I’m surprised to have so many reds, but rumor has it that there are people who love red.  So I’m betting they all go to great homes.  Chase is brindle and both his parent’s are brindle, but we know from the Magic litter that he produces red,  Leidy is a brindle, her father is a brindle, but her mom is the devilish redhead Inca.

More later from the household that never sleeps (or so it seems).

  1. Red Dog Mom says:

Keep those deep, rich reds coming! We need to keep those in the lines or we’ll end up like Pems – who lust after our dark red dogs.

  2. Cheryl Kienast says:

Well, I’ll just go all Southern and say, “Bless your heart!” How exhausting for you and Leidy! Glad it’s done. Sorry about the last boy. Always difficult to lose one. The rest all look healthy and well fleshed. Little Reba will catch up in no time, I’m sure. You both deserve some rest! Big hugs and congratulations from Papa Chase! His chest just keeps expanding with pride!

  3. C-Myste says:

I was only one brindle girl off. I guessed 3 reds and 5 brindles, 3 girls and 5 boys. Darn it on the last one, but I was figuring that’s what was going to happen.

  4. Jeri says:

Well, I’m glad she gave you the girls first so you didn’t have to wait through 5 boys to see if there were any! LOL They look beautiful, hope they continue to have a good start to life.

  5. Taryn says:

Congrats to you and Leidy! Sorry about the last pup.

Thanks for posting so many newborn photos!

  6. Alta says:

Congrats on the little ones. Hope you got to catch up on some shut eye. Sorry about the last one, always sad.

  7. Julie says:

I wish you were closer and I was ready for a new pup. I would love a red or a brindle! I can’t wait to see more pictures.

  8. mandy says:

I guessed 7 but never made a comment, figured it would jinx you, lol

  9. Richelle says:

Yup, I’m in the red camp, but the red boy at my house won’t do with adding another. I’ll covet them mightily, though, I’m sure! 🙂

And I totally forgot that Leidy was an Inca puppy!

  10. sandy says:

Congrats to all…too bad about the last little guy. Now, sleep some and enjoy the new life in your midst.

  11. DeAnn says:

So glad it is over and you both can rest. What a long haul. Very sorry about the last little guy. Can’t wait to see more pictures. Gooo Red Dogs!

  12. jean says:

Nice Litter just the right amount Sorry about the last boy, but that happens sometimes. Congratulations.

  13. Le'o says:

Penni, you must be nearly as exhausted as Leidy. Congratulations on beautiful babies. I’d be coveting a red if I wasn’t already going to help raise one and if I didn’t already have so many young ones, both “teenagers” and soon to be whelped.

Sorry about the one you lost. I still think about the ones Kayla lost. I don’t know if we ever really forget any of them, however brief they are part of our world and even if we never smelled their breath.

Hugs. You are an amazing midwife.

  14. Jenn says:

I was so happy to see Leidy had her babies. The kids at school have been asking, so we checked today (haven’t since Monday, internet problems), and Surprise! It was great to be able to see Leidy and her babies. Some of the students have decided Victor is their favorite, so we will be checking in regularly. Me, well, I’m just happy Leidy came through so well. Can’t wait for the puppy party. Hugs to my girl.

  15. Amy says:

    Congrats on the beautiful puppies!
