  2. Rango At the Ranch

Johnny and Laura have entrusted me with Rango, their Chase/Ditto puppy (f/k/a Vance) for the week while they are in Los Angeles.  We met up last night and I took temporary custody of the cute little brindle boy.  He and Tater (f/k/a Topper) and Nola played themselves into comas.  They gobbled down dinner and went back to playing.  When I turned off the lights there was silence throughout the house.  I think the babies were grateful that playtime was over.  It’s really fun having youngsters rolling one another across the floor, play barking, carrying firewood across the patio, and gnawing on antlers.  I’ll try for photos this week.

While I waited for Johnny, Laura and Rango last night, my iPhone caught this sunset shot.  I love New Mexico for its color.

  3. Nola’s Sunday Herding Lesson

Nola is 11 months old today.  She’s been going to weekly herding lessons for a few months.  Like many puppies, she was hesitant to move between the fence and the livestock — looked like a pretty scary place to her.  So her instructor has been taking her into a small pen packed with sheep and moving her on the perimeter.  She is learning that the sheep will move away from her — how empowering for a little red girl!

Then Nola gets to try the goats in the round pen. I just ordered a new 10′ pleather line for her. The big fat cotton line gets caught on the brush and brings her up short, or she steps on it and does a chin plant. We’ll see if it’s easier for her to deal with the light pleather.

  4. Sunday’s Herding Adventures

Chase’s first try at Intermediate Sheep Herding will be the weekend of October 8-9.  Sunday he worked with Susan on the Intermediate course.  I love to watch him moving across the field.  Video from Cheryl — lovely as always.
