On January 6, 1912, the President signed paperwork that made New Mexico an official State. The rest of the country gained the majesty of our skies, the beauty of our mountains and forests, the vastness of our deserts. One-third of our State belongs to the Federal Government or to one or another Indian Pueblo. That makes our tax base slim but usually protects the natural elegance of the landscape. In land mass, New Mexico is one of the five largest states, in population, it is one of the smallest.
So, happy 100th birthday to the Land of Enchantment — land that I love. You are all welcome to come visit — not sure we want anyone else to move here permanently though. We wouldn’t want to have a population of two million people. Be aware that NM gave women the vote early, that our Courts admit polygraph results, and that we grow the BEST green chile (NOT “CHILI”).
