  1. Thundershirt — Amazing!

    January 29, 2012 by myeye

I ordered a Thundershirt.  Cardis need a medium size.  My dogs love thunder, lightning, fireworks, hot air balloons.  They run out the dog door to bark until they chase whatever it is out of our yard.  What they really, really hate is having their nails done.  If they would hold still, with the Dremel Stylus that I use, the process would take fewer than five minutes per dog.  It is, however, usually a ten to fifteen minute ordeal.  Holmes is big and strong.  Since he stopped being a puppy, I’ve had to lie across him on the grooming table to hold him down.  It is miserable for both of us.  So, enter the Thundershirt.

I put Holmes’ shirt on and lifted him up on the grooming table.  I picked up the Dremel and HE HELD HIS PAW OUT TO ME.  he wasn’t that cooperative during the entire process, he jerked away a few times, but it took me about three minutes to do his nails.  Whatever the Thundershirt does for him, I love it.  It must feel as if he is being gently hugged.  While I bent over him to do the nails, he licked my ear and chin, but never tried to spring off the table (normal) or to suck his feet up into his underside (normal).  He left his legs out where I could pick up each foot, separate the toes and grind the nails down.

I tell you, it’s a miracle!  No one paid me to say this — it is simply a product that will make a huge difference in my dog-care life.  Thank you, Thundershirt people!  I’m going to send this first one with Holmes to Anne’s house — he can wear it on the airplane to ensure a pleasant trip.  I’m going to order a second one to keep here for toe nail time.

  2. Conformation Drill, Holmes, and the Weather

    January 15, 2012 by myeye

How much “stuff” can fit in one post.  We’re going to find out.

Our training club offers conformation drill on Saturday nights at 6:30 pm.  That means that only the dyed-in-the-wool dog people are there.  Normal people are out to dinner, at a movie, watching television.  We are at drill class.  The instructor has Vizsla, but has shown for a long time and is so helpful.  Nola is my subject at the moment.  She is going to shows in Hobbs, NM February 4-5, hasn’t been to shows since the local cluster in mid-October.  It seemed wise to take her out for a spin.  You have never seen a dog have more fun doing what she was supposed to be doing — how cool is that?  Down and back — whoo hoo!  Go around — whoo hoo!  Get examined on the table — way cool!  Oh my, I love this youngster.  I think she’s very nicely put together, but her attitude does it for me.  She will be successful no matter what venue.  You have to adore Naughty Nola — that’s a message from her.

Holmes is not going to leave for Lake Arrowhead until January 28th.  Valerie has some medical things going on so we are waiting until she clears the deck.  Holmes requires both hands and some attention.  He’s a sweet boy, but he is also very excited about being alive.  We have stored some pupsicles and one day I will have Holmes’ children here, but he will be living in the land of tofu and Perrier with his new best friend Kodi.

The weather — it only counts because it is in the mid-fifties.  Sweatshirt and no jacket.  That means I must scoop the dog yards — sigh!  I hope you have something better to do.  Oh, I just thought of another stall tactic.  We now have a Tractor Supply Company.  Its Grand Opening is this weekend.  In addition to carrying PINK Carharts, they have dog beds for $7.99 each.  When your dogs disembowel dog beds, you definitely look for sales.  The scooping can wait.

    Herding photos coming later . . .

  3. Triple Storm

    December 4, 2011 by myeye

We had snow Friday evening and night.  As one would expect, the sun came out yesterday and melted the snow.  Last night it was very cold so all the melted snow froze and more snow fell on it.  There is a third storm predicted for tonight or tomorrow.  Folks in the midwest and east are used to this, but the poor New Mexico drivers have no clue how to drive in this stuff.  Heck!  In the summer if it clouds up and “could be” rain, they all run into each other.

This is my front yard this morning when I ventured out to fetch the paper.  (I should teach a dog to do that for me.)  Snow and fog — can’t see my mountains.  So, I’ll grind up a batch of dog food — a thawed turkey is waiting for the machete.  Then I’ll vacuum up some of the dried mud from yesterday.

  4. Sunset and a Red Puppy

    October 10, 2011 by myeye

Yesterday John (my neighbor) and my high school football player worker made inroads into the chores at the house.  They replaced the outside back spigot.  It turns out it had been leaking underground for a long time.  So now there is no leak and I can spray things with the hose.  We winterized the swamp cooler (which means we will have some 90 degree days soon), and put a louvred bi-fold door on the hot water closet.  Jared cleaned up goatheads — nasty little flat growing plants with stickers that are hard on people and dog feet.  Tater and Inca helped them so it probably took a little longer than it should have.  Little Tater has opinions about everything.

    He will listen to reason

Then we all watched the sunset.  It was a very good day for the house chores and for the herding members of the family.

  5. Ending the Work Week

    October 7, 2011 by myeye

The Balloon Fiesta was rained out again today.  Boo!  I always feel badly for people who traveled to watch the balloons go up, but are disappointed by the weather.

This is a weekend for keeping track.  Holmes and Nola are at dog shows — 4 days in southern New Mexico.  Chase and Lowri are at a herding trial in Cumming Georgia.  Chase is making his first attempts at Intermediate Sheep and Lowri is planning to earn her PT.  Chase/Magic daughter Darby will be trialing in Arizona or Southern California to earn her HT.

Treasure es muy embarasada — she is so pregnant.  She isn’t due until October 27th, but is finding it difficult to lie down comfortably.  I’m looking forward to this group of little baddogs taking over Cheryl’s house.  Chase will be so happy.  As you may recall, he loves to raise puppies.

I’m going to take advantage of the cool weather to clean the house and the yard.  Monday I will put together the catalog for Sandia Dog Obedience Club’s VST Test a week from Sunday.  We have five entries — here’s hoping we return to our normal stunning fall weather in time for the test.

I am walking out of the office at 3:00 to start my weekend.  I think I deserve it.
