Victor has ears!  Smooch is close.  Here are both of them from this weekend.

Boy!  Does he ever have ears!

  2. Finally — Home Sweet Home

    February 14, 2011 by myeye

Today I did something so stupid — truly so stupid.  I had booked “get away fares” at Southwest so I could go to the puppy party.  I paid no attention to the routing coming home.  It turned out to be Nashville to Baltimore to Chicago to Albuquerque.  That’s bad, but I made it worse.  I landed in Baltimore and looked at the departure screen — there was the Albuquerque flight at the gate at which I had just arrived.  I was happy!  So, I sat down with Mills (remember?  That’s my Kindle) and was happily reading.  I looked up at the screen and saw the flight was delayed a bit, but my brain was swarming with images of puppy and not a single practical thought, so I went back to reading Mills.  Time to stand in line.  I was A27.  I went to the appropriate stanchion.  Another passenger walked up to me and said “What’s your number?”  I said, “A27.”  He said “No, I’m A27.”  I said, “Well, shoot.  Southwest made a mistake.”  He said, “No, you have a different flight number on your boarding pass.”  I said, “Oh, S**T.”  Sure enough I’d missed my plane, on a Sunday afternoon the day before Valentine’s Day.

So, SW started trying to get me on other flights Stand By (that’s what you become when you blow your reservation).  I got on another Baltimore/Chicago/Albuquerque flight.  In Chicago, I was bumped off the plane because the flight from Chicago to Albuquerque was full of people who had “reserved” seats.  I sat in Chicago for a l-o-n-g time.  Finally there was a seat on a plane to Denver with a 10 minute connection to the Denver/Albuquerque flight.  Southwest held the flight to Albuquerque for a bunch of weary travelers trying to get back here.  My luggage had been at Southwest baggage for many hours when I showed up.

I drove the 45 minutes home, arrived at 12:30 AM, greeted all the baddogs, took the tape off Nola’s ears, and now I’m going to bed.  I’ll clean the residue from the red baby’s ears tomorrow morning.

  3. Rhys (Victor) Update

    February 9, 2011 by myeye

My incessant whining about needing photos led to email from George and Connie.  Our friend (Daybreake) Dawn went to George and Connie’s to help with ear taping.  She must have snow-shoe’d over.  I cannot thank her enough — not only for helping to get those big ol’ ears up, but also for “demanding” that photos go to G-Ma Penni.  Here’s our cute Brindle boy.

  4. A Princess Crown and Reward Toy

    February 2, 2011 by myeye

The first ear-taping got Nola’s ears up to a high airplane wing position.  She’s able to prick them higher, but I didn’t want to take any chances.  So (since we are again snowed in) I did a secondary taping this morning.  I did not use the moleskin, but rather took the next size up foam roller (it’s a pale aqua), used the skin adhesive to glue just the roller to the inside of her ear, and then re-taped.  Needless to say, she’s not happy with the contraption on her head.  However, to sweeten the pot, I pulled a new toy out of the collection bag.  THAT made things a lot more palatable.

This toy includes a tennis ball so when you throw it, it bounces.  Nola brings the toy back — that won’t last!  However, with later training, the behavior will return.  Good girl, Nola!  The bigger baddogs were locked up for a little while so the baby could enjoy her prize in peace — before they enjoyed it in pieces.

  5. Do We Have Ears?

    January 29, 2011 by myeye

This morning Nola and I took the tape off her ears.  Holmes wanted to help — so much that he had to be crated.  For those who taped the way I did, here’s how I remove the tape and moleskin.

Removing the tape and moleskin requires treats.  (Thanks to Tracy at Four Paws Barkery, I have lots of Liver Lips which definitely sooth the savage beast.)  I cut up the center of the princess crown between the ears.  I find an edge of the top piece of tape and begin to work it loose.  I gently peel it away from the tape layer below it.  After a week (which is how long it’s been), the sticky part of the tape has dried a bit, and it can be slowly peeled away from the ear.  I work the layers off one at a time.  Sometimes I make another cut or two up the tape from the bottom being really, really careful not to crop my puppy’s ears.  When the tape is off and I’m down to the hair roller and moleskin, I hold my thumb against the moleskin and my forefinger against the back of the ear to pull off the roller.  I find the moleskin has begun to loosen around the edges, so I gently work it off the inside of the ear.  If any spots are still thoroughly stuck, I wet a cotton ball with nail polish remover and wipe along the stuck side of the moleskin and the ear until it it loosens.  I work my way up the ear until I can remove the moleskin.

There will still be some adhesive residue which comes off easily with the nail polish remover.

I put the puppy down, let her shake her head and cavort around — then I offer her a Liver Lip.

    Well, they might be up?

I think they are — now will they stay?

Let’s see how her ears are by tomorrow morning.  If they need to be re-taped, we’ll do that.  If they are up, but a little floppy, I’ll put a Breathe Rite strip on the outside back of the floppy ear(s).  I think our little Nola looks a lot like a Cardigan Welsh Corgi this morning — though I do sort of miss that beautiful turquoise princess crown.
